When it rains it pours…literally! In its final week, January came to a close with heavy precipitation and lower temperatures. With the nearly 23 inches of rain over the course of the month, almost one third of that rain fell during this last week, coupled with decreases to minimum and average air temperatures of 21.3 Celsius degrees (74.4 F) and 24.1 Celsius degrees (75.3), respectively.
One our most critical months of the year, the very lowly sunlight and dark skies could lead to plant stress and induce NDF. And although these climatic conditions makes the destruction of crop residues and soil preparation very difficult, we have are making use of heavy machinery to prep the soil and prevent conditions that breed the proliferation of wild flies. Its expensive task, but one we know to be necessary to maintain our standards.
